Residency Program Vision, Mission and Goals

Our vision

To prepare physicians with the knowledge and skills necessary to practice clinical preventive medicine, promote health, prevent disease, and improve the health of communities and defined populations. Our graduates will work to reduce health disparities, decrease disease burden and improve health outcomes for all people, especially the people of Mississippi.

Our mission

To equip physicians with the knowledge and skills needed to improve the health of individuals and populations by identifying health needs; designing, implementing and evaluating health services; and managing the health of individuals, communities and defined populations. The program emphasizes reducing health disparities, decreasing disease burden, improving health outcomes, and preparing graduates to successfully attain board certification in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine (PHGPM) after completion of training.

We will accomplish this mission by:

  • Providing residents with a range of academic, clinical, public health and population-based experiences to develop the knowledge and skills needed to practice PHGPM independently and improve the performance and outcomes of public health and health care systems. These experiences are designed to develop the ACGME core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice, as well as the specialty-specific outcomes expected of PHGPM physicians.
  • Cultivating within the department and residency an environment that emphasizes excellence in research, patient and population care, quality improvement, patient safety, professionalism and a commitment to the well-being of all members of the health care team.
  • Modeling and mentoring by faculty the value and importance of teamwork, scientific curiosity, problem-solving skills, intellectual rigor, and professional responsibility that support the development of physicians.

Specific goals of the training program include:

  • Educating residents on the principles and practice of public health, clinical preventive medicine and population medicine
  • Educating residents on the underlying determinants of health, the causes of health disparities and approaches for reducing disparities
  • Developing skills in the core functions of public health practice, health systems change, quality improvement, patient safety and population health management
  • Developing skills in clinical care and clinical prevention
  • Developing skills in working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to improve health outcomes
  • Developing skills in conducting research to improve the health and well-being of patients and populations
  • Promoting scholarship and leadership in public health and population medicine
  • Promoting lifelong learning
